Obituary

Agnes M. Townsend

Saco

Agnes M. Townsend, 95, of Saco, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.

Agnes was born in Portland, Maine on May 28, 1930, a daughter of Peter and Norma (Flaherty) Walsh. She grew up in Portland, and graduated from Portland High School.

On September 15, 1955 Agnes and James G. Townsend got married. The couple initially settled in an apartment in Scarborough, but within two years they bought property from family in Saco and they started their family.

Agnes started her working career with Nissan Bakery, where she worked for 15 years. She later transitioned to Saco & Biddeford Savings, and ultimately ended up with the cafeteria program at Saco Middle School where she spent many years.

Agnes was a faithful communicant and generous supporter of St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach. She was known for being a prayerful person and always having her Rosary with her.

For over 25 years Agnes and James had the good fortune of spending their winters at their second home in Florida. She really enjoyed traveling and they always drove down together. She loved to see everything and enjoyed going to all the yard sales on the way down and in Florida.

Most of all, Agnes loved the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by many.

Agnes is predeceased by her siblings, Peter, Walley, Frank, Coley (her twin brother), Billy, Martin, and Mary.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, James G. Townsend Sr.; by her two sons, James G. Townsend II, and Thomas E. Townsend; by her six grandchildren, Jessica Zousoumas, Angela Townsend, Kimberly Townsend, Tayla Savage, Andrew Townsend, and Christopher Townsend; by her six great-grandchildren, Aleecia Santiago, Jacob Gibson, Bella Townsend, Charity Goudreau, Tommy Goudreau and Christian Goudreau; as well as by several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10:30AM – 12:30PM, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, Saco. A Funeral Mass will follow at 1pm, the same day, at St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach. All are invited to a luncheon, taking place after the Mass, located in the Basement Hall of St. Joseph Church in Biddeford.

Agnes will be buried at 1:00pm, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in Scarborough Memorial Cemetery, Old Blue Point Rd., Scarborough.
