Alice Burke
(Talbot) Brooks
Jan 1, 1931 — Jun 27, 2024
Saco
Alice Burke (Talbot) Brooks, 93, died in Saco on June 27, 2024, after a life filled with love, humor, and joy.
She grew up in Gardiner, Maine, the New Year's baby of Anne and Edward Talbot, sharing a happy childhood with her younger brother, Sam. After graduating from Farmington State Teachers College (now UMF) in 1952, Alice taught first grade in Bath, where she met her future husband, Waldo "Bud" Brooks, with whom she raised three children, mostly in Hallowell, while enjoying a fulfilling teaching career.
She retired with Bud to Forest City, Maine, and wintered in Spring Hill, Florida. Alice cherished her family and friends, and was in turn cherished by them. She was an avid reader and enjoyed participating in local book groups wherever she lived. Alice's grandchildren always received the latest Newbery Medal award-winning books from her, which became treasured reads. She will be dearly remembered as a woman of profound faith who never met a stranger, never forgot a birthday, and liked nothing better than a good laugh at her own expense.
Predeceased by her husband, parents, and brother, Alice is survived by son Mark Brooks and wife Catherine WoodBrooks, daughter Carol Brooks Ball and husband John Hart, and daughter Jane Maynard and husband Tom; grandchildren Lynnsay Applbaum and husband David, Brendan Ball, and Caroline Ball and fiancé Matthew Donaghey; sister-in-law Joan Cummings; and many nieces and nephews (and their families) with whom she shared countless joyful memories.
Alice's family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Seal Rock Healthcare at Atlantic Heights who helped Alice recover from a broken hip in March, 2023, and to Beacon Hospice, who provided compassionate comfort during her final days.
There will be a funeral Mass in remembrance on Friday, July 5, at 11am at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 132 McKeen St, Brunswick, ME 04011.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sisters of the Religious of the Assumption, 11 Old English Road, Worcester, MA 01609 (www.assumptionsisters.org).
