Obituary

Daniel R. Russell, 65, of Saco, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at home surrounded by his family on August 19, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Dan was born in Madawaska, Maine, one of two children to Hudo and Colette Russell. He graduated from Madawaska High School, class of 1979. Dan went on to do coursework at both the University of Maine-Fort Kent and the University of Maine-Presque Isle. He ultimately received his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Programming from CDI in Massachusetts.

Dan soon went to work for Whitesmiths, Ltd. located in Concord, MA. It was during this time when he first met the love of his life, Candice Appleby, who was also employed with Whitesmiths. The couple married in 1987 and settled in Cumberland, Maine, where they raised their family rooted in love and devotion. Dan became a founding partner at Workgroup Technology Partners, where he passionately remained dedicated to his work right up to the time of his passing.

Outside of work, Dan had several interests and hobbies, with hunting and fishing high at the top of his list. Over the years, he made many trips to the Allagash to enjoy the outdoors, which also included canoe trips on the St. John River. Dan and Candice were avid golfers, and were fortunate to have taken a number of sailing vacations to the Bahamas.

Above all, Dan cherished his wife, their children, and grandchildren, and the time they spent together. Dan was thoughtful, kind, and incredibly generous, always willing to lend a hand or be there for those who needed him. He was someone his family and friends could always count on, no matter the circumstance. Dan had a wonderful sense of humor that could bring laughter to those around him, often when they needed it most. He loved the people in his life with his entire being and made those around him feel truly cared for. His warmth, humor, loyalty, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dan is predeceased by his mother, Colette Russell. He is survived by his wife, Candice of 39 years; by his father, Hudo; by his brother, Ivan and wife Marlena; by his two daughters, Alyssa Mascolo and husband John, and their children, Haley, Joseph, Eliana, and Sophia; and Kelsey Banks and husband Christopher, and their son, Beau.

A memorial mass will take place at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church at 10:00am in Madawaska, Maine on September 4, 2026.
