Obituary

Dennis B. Twomey

Dennis B. Twomey died peacefully on December 10th, 2023 surrounded by his family after a long illness.

Dennis was born on September 7, 1939 in Biddeford, Maine to Bernice and Norbert Twomey. After graduating from Biddeford High School in 1957, he served overseas in the U.S. Air Force. Dennis began a career in journalism as a reporter for the Biddeford Journal Tribune. Soon after he earned his degree from the University of Maine while working as an editor at the Portland Evening Express and Portland Press Herald, where he enjoyed a long career before retiring in 2001.

Dennis was a devoted and loving father and grandfather. He was active in the Saco community, where he raised his family. Dennis loved the outdoors and was an avid runner. He ran local 5K races well into his 70's, often cheered on by his grandchildren. His favorite spots were Caribou Lake, where the family enjoyed many vacations canoeing and camping together, and Old Orchard Beach where he spent summers as a child. After retirement he also enjoyed spending winters in Florida.

Dennis and his wife Linda moved to Old Orchard Beach in 1987. They were parishioners of St. Margaret church in Old Orchard Beach where his great aunt, Helen O'Connell, and her husband were instrumental in the opening of the church in the 1930's.

He nurtured a love of learning and reading in his children and grandchildren and shared his favorite books with them. Dennis also volunteered for many years at the Libby Memorial Library in Old Orchard Beach where he served on the Board of Directors and as a member of "Friends of the Library."

Dennis is dearly missed by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Linda; daughter, Karen Carringer (husband David); son, Michael; son, Dennis (wife Carol); daughter, Julie ; sister, Maria Twomey-Thompson; and brother Paul Twomey. He was "gramps" to his beloved grandchildren, Joshua, Benjamin, and Catherine; and is also survived by many nieces, nephews; sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11AM Saturday, June 22, 2024 at St. Margaret's Church in Old Orchard Beach. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Biddeford. Following the services, the family would like to invite you to Birdies Grill and Tavern in Old Orchard Beach.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to either of two organizations that were dear to his heart: the Libby Memorial Library or St. Margaret Church both of Old Orchard Beach.
