Dorothy R. McCurdy
Dayton
Dorothy Ruth (Matthews) McCurdy, 91, of Dayton, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at home where she lived with her youngest son Lee and his wife.
Dorothy was born in Calais, Maine on April 13, 1930, daughter of Elmer Ellsworth Matthews and Edith Serena (Preston) Hatt. Dorothy grew up and was educated in the town of Woodland and returned to school to earn her diploma on May 27,1980 from Calais High School. Dorothy married her beloved husband Horace McCurdy on November 9, 1947 and together they had 5 children; Ruth, Clifford, Allen, Barry and Lee.
Dorothy and Horace owned and operated McCurdy's Canteen for a number of years in the 60's. Dorothy would take care of the customers while her husband entertained the patrons with his musical talents. She loved people and would spend countless hours talking and spending time with her customers until they closed the canteen. She then focused her time raising her children until she returned to work for the Town of Woodland and then for Peter Dana Point Indian Township as a school bus driver which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Dorothy had many interesting hobbies. Her passions included jewelry making, knitting and genealogy and so much more. She treasured the trips that she and Horace would take with their motorhome. While wintering in the warmth Horace would entertain with his music at local events and private parties, allowing Dorothy to socialize with friends and RV Park neighbors.
Most of all, Dorothy loved the time spent with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by many.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Horace McCurdy in 2005, and her daughter Ruth Kidder-McCurdy in 2016 as well as her 2nd son Allen who sadly passed away at 3 months.
Dorothy is survived by her three sons Clifford McCurdy of Florida, Barry McCurdy of New Hampshire, and Lee McCurdy and his wife Crystal of Dayton, Maine, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services are to be arranged for family and friends in the Spring of 2022. Dorothy will be laid to rest in Baileyville Cemetery beside her husband. To view Dorothy's memorial page, or leave an online condolence, please visit www.cotefuneralhome.com
