George Pappavasiliou passed away peacefully at home, on May 22, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

George was born and raised in Newburyport, MA. With a natural gift for numbers, George served in the financial division of the U.S. Army. Upon his return from the armed services he met the love of his life at a Greek dance, Dorothy Mendros, who predeceased him last November. They were joyfully married 68 years ago at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.

Most important to George was his family, which he nurtured with his faith, courage, and love. George and Dorothy raised their three children, Polly Anne, Pamela and John in Saco, Maine. His greatest joy was with his grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Juliana and George. "Bubba" enjoyed the time he spent with them and the attention, affection and encouragement he could provide to his most precious blessings. He took great pleasure in attending their numerous sporting events and activities and never missed an opportunity to volunteer at school to support and encourage them. In turn his grandchildren could not wait for a chance to spend time at Bubba & Yiayia's, as time was so special there. Family traditions and get togethers were thoroughly enjoyed by all; especially the cutting of the "Yiayia & Bubba" bread.

George was a man of purpose, honor, and integrity. These traits were evident through numerous public and private leadership roles and services. He worked for decades as Vice President, Controller, and Treasurer at H. B. Fleming, Inc. of South Portland, Maine. He was a successful entrepreneur who, together with his wife, built a successful accounting and finance business. Many of their clients and families became life long friends. He served on numerous boards and committees.

George dedicated many decades of service to several parish councils, first at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Portland, ME then at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Saco. George's participation to the St. Demetrios Church Council spanned over 55 years, with many of those years as Parish Council President. To his last days he continued to serve and help guide the Church with humility, wisdom and discernment. He considered it an honor to have worked with Father Basil and church members over the years.

George's dedication and leadership was a result of his gratitude to God for all things. He felt truly blessed for his many wonderful years together with the loving support of his beloved wife Dorothy, children and grandchildren.

He is survived by loved ones Polly Anne, Pamela, John, Matthew, Michael, Juliana, George, Marie, James, Kate, godchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all those who provided comfort and care to George these past few months.

Visitation hours will be Tuesday, 5-7 p.m. at Cote Funeral Home. Trisagion Prayer at 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Bradley Street in Saco. Burial will follow at St. Demetrios Cemetery, Biddeford.
