On January 1st, 1929, Helen Charlotte (McGarrell) Hathaway was the first baby born in Boston, Massachusetts to Helen (Scrivens) and Edward McGarrell of Jamaica Plain, MA.
Helen passed away peacefully at Gosnell Hospice House on March 18, 2021 at the age of 92. Our hearts are comforted knowing she is now reunited with her beloved husband, James Henry Hathaway.
Helen owned and operated Mary Jane's Beauty Shop in Holbrook for many years. A devoted Catholic, she served as Eucharistic Minister and sang in the choir at St. Joseph's Church in Holbrook. Equally devoted to her family and community, after retirement she volunteered with local service organizations and enjoyed summers with her family in Old Orchard Beach. When she became visually impaired by macular degeneration, she went back to school at 73 years young at the Carroll Center for the Blind. After a long life, her family takes comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and is now at peace.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Helen's name are asked to consider American Macular Degeneration Fund.
