Obituary

James “Jimmy” B. Harmon, 83, of Scarborough, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at his home.

Jim was born in Portland, Maine on April 20, 1943, a son of John and Thelma (Baker) Harmon. He grew up in Scarborough and graduated from Scarborough High School. As a boy, he spent countless hours on Scarborough Beach and fostering his love of animals. Jimmy was known to bring home a wide variety of animals including a recued pet seal named “Suzie”. Jim made neighborhood deliveries for Harmon’s Market, a local family market owned by his parents.

After graduation Jim enlisted in the United States Navy and faithfully served our country from 1968 to 1970. Soon afterwards, he attended both the Boston School of Art and Portland School of Art, in his ability with watercolors focusing on landscapes. Jimmy was a phenomenal cook and enjoyed entertaining which came very natural to him.

Jimmy worked for 32 years at Weyerhauser, a local manufacturing company, but his heart and passion was always in his artwork. Many of his paintings will be enjoyed by his family and friends for many generations.

Jimmy married the love of his life, Peggy Rioux, on September 2, 1984 in the home where he grew up. The couple settled in that very same home where they raised their daughter, Aili. As a young family they enjoyed traveling to their rustic cabin in Stratton, ME which they affectionately called “Pukin Mauna.” For many years they spent every weekend cross country skiing, walking in the woods, downhill skiing and simply enjoying quality time together. During the summer months Jimmy found peace and satisfaction in creating elaborate flower gardens on his property, and in watching the many birds that paid daily visits to his birdfeeders.

Jimmy and Peggy were fortunate to have traveled together throughout the US and abroad, visiting places like South Carolina, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Spain. One of the most memorable trips he took with his family and dear friends, was a road trip throughout the midwestern states. He also had the opportunity to ski in Colorado with his best friend Michael Reid and family, and to experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alaska where he and Mike fished for salmon.

Jimmy was immensely proud of his daughter Aili and of her husband Matt for all their accomplishments and giving him his most important role, becoming a Papa. His four grandchildren; Henley, Waylon, Wade and Willis were his world. He and Peggy’s days soon became filled spending countless hours at the beach, cheering them on in their various activities, taking yearly vacations with the family and teaching them life is always better with a sweet treat and sandy toes.

If Jimmy were to describe himself in just two words, it would be “Beach Bum”. He absolutely loved the sun, sand, surfing, and simply sharing this passion with his family and friends.

Jimmy will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jimmy was predeceased by his parents, John and Thelma Harmon, brother, Steve Harmon, brother-in-law Robert Abbott and by his nephew, Robbie Abbott.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Harmon, of 42 years; by his daughter, Aili Desrochers and husband Matt; by his grandchildren, Henley, Waylon, Wade and Willis Desrochers; by his brother, John Harmon; by his sister, Judy Williams and husband Ernie; and by his niece, Stacey Abbott and her boys Tucker, Sayler and Sullivan Conley.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life beginning at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at Jimmy’s Homestead in Scarborough.
