Jay T. Sweeney
Lyman
Jay T. Sweeney, 64, of Lyman, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
He was born in Concord, New Hampshire on October 13, 1959, a son of John and Donna (Cozzi) Sweeney. He graduated from Concord High School, class of 1977. Jay was a star athlete lettering in cross country running and skiing.
Jay was a proud veteran and served from 1978 to 1996. First joining the NH Army National Guard and later activated as a U.S. Army Lieutenant for Operation Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain.
After the military, Jay was employed by All Systems Satellite of Portsmouth, NH for 23 years. Most recently he worked for Royal River Heat Pumps and planned to retire in 2024.
While living in Portsmouth, NH Jay met his wife Deb. They moved to their beautiful property in Lyman, Maine where they married on June 27, 1999. It was at their home that countless memories were made with his family and friends; swimming in their pool, lawnmower rides with the kids, BBQs, and lobster bakes.
Being in his yard, or outside in nature, was one of Jay's favorite pastimes. His hobbies included hunting, archery, fishing, boating, and walking his beloved dog, Poppy. Every year he looked forward to the fishing derby on Lake Winnipesaukee and spent many summer days pontooning on Sebago Lake.
Jay appreciated the little details in life; a firm handshake, a nice suit, one on one chats, choosing a perfectly worded card for his wife, a good "Dad joke," enjoying a cold IPA with friends, and quality time spent with his family.
Family meant the most to Jay and those he left behind will cherish the memories they made with him. He will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his father John Sweeney, his wife of 24 years Debra (Mack) Sweeney, his children and their families; Amalia, Shane (Kerri), and Andrea (John), as well as seven grandchildren; Tala, Leilyiah, Taylor, Jackson, Ava, Hardy, and Nell. He is also survived by his great aunt Jean Sweeney, his sister Sarah Bean, his nephew Stephen (Suzy), niece Susan (Ben), great nieces; Haleigh and Blake, great nephews; Christopher, Nicholas, Charlie, and Stevie, and the countless friends he thought of as family.
He was predeceased by his mother Donna Sweeney.
A Gathering of Remembrance will be held from 5-7PM Friday, March 8, 2024 at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, 87 James Street, Saco.
A Graveside Service with military honors will be held at New Hampshire State Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire at a later date.
