Obituary

Joanne Canning

Saco

Joanne S. Canning, 66, of Saco, passed away on the morning of Sunday, March 8, 2026, in Portland.

She was born in Biddeford on March 25, 1959, a daughter of Raymond and Paulette (LeBlond) Loranger. She was raised alongside her brother and sister and was proud to be known as the oldest girl rather than the middle child.

Joanne was raised in Biddeford and attended Biddeford High School where she enjoyed playing field hockey with her friends. She graduated from high school in 1977 and soon after enrolled at Mercy School of Nursing, where she began her path toward becoming a registered nurse.

As soon as she graduated nursing school, Joanne was scouted by the faculty of the old Webber Hospital in Biddeford which later became Southern Maine Medical Center. She devoted 37 years of her life to caring for those who needed a kind and patient person until her retirement.

Joanne married the love of her life, David Canning, in 1985, and together they shared 40 years of love and devotion to each other.

Joanne liked playing volleyball and softball when time permitted. She also enjoyed traveling with David. Together they went on cruises to the Caribbean and took a trip around Europe to visit family and explore what the continent had to offer. They also took many trips to Florida to visit and spend time with family. In later years, David and Joanne took smaller day trips by going out to eat and attending concerts. However, Joanne's favorite past-time was being around her family. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Joanne was predeceased by her father: Raymond Loranger, and mother: Paulette (LeBlond) Loranger.

Joanne is survived by her husband: David Canning, her daughter: Samantha Armiger and husband Craig, her brother: Raymond Loranger and wife Kim, her sister: Patricia Huot and husband Richard, and her two grandchildren: Felix and Eloise

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the American Kidney Fund in Joanne's name.

Visiting Hours will be from 3-7PM Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, Saco. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated at 11AM Friday, March 13, 2026, at St. Joseph's Church in Biddeford. A Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.
