John Edward Nickerson III
Saco
John Edward Nickerson III, also lovingly known as "Nicko" and "Papa Crow", of Concord Massachusetts, passed away on April 28th, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born on December 28th, 1946, to John Edward Nickersion II and Lucille Hallowell Bond Nickerson. John had a strong sense of justice and would proceed to serve in the U.S. military as a proud member of the Marines from 1965 to 1969. He served 2 full tours fighting in the Vietnam war, during his 3rd tour John was wounded in combat and returned to civilian life. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, honoring and thanking him for his service and sacrifice to our country. At discharge John had achieved the rank of Sergeant E-5.
Nicko attended the University of Southern Maine before settling in Kingfield, Maine, in 1972. There he was known as a volunteer firefighter, a member of the Valley Rats Mud Football team, as well as his work at Sugarloaf USA where he was at times both part of the ski patrol and as part of the overnight trail grooming team as a bombardier driver. John married Barbara Wolf in 1977, and they raised three sons, John "Jed", Thomas, and Mathew. Their home was known for being welcoming to all and a place of holiday celebration.
John believed strongly in doing the right thing and was a well-loved member of the community, always willing to offer a helping hand and a friendly word. He will be remembered for being a man who did his best in every situation, for being a dedicated and loving father, and for never losing his ability to bring a smile to your face. John was well loved everywhere he went, and he will be missed dearly.
Visiting Hours will be held at 10am with a funeral service at 11am, on May 10th, 2025, at Cote Funeral Home in Saco, Maine. John will be entombed at Laurel Hill Cemetery following these services. There will be a gathering at 2 pm at Run Of The Mill, also in Saco, for those who wish to share stories and honor the passing of this beloved father. A celebration of life is pending planning, details will be announced at a later date.
