Camp Ellis

Margaret Roper Hindsman, age 98, passed peacefully in the early morning hours under a bright sunrise on 6/20/2024 at her seasonal home in Camp Ellis, Saco, Maine.

She was born in Hiram, Georgia on summer solstice 6/21/1925, a daughter of John and Mary (Ragsdale) Roper.

Margaret, never a nickname, spent her first five years as a Georgia country girl. At the birth of her sister the family moved to Atlanta. She grew up a high achiever graduating at age 15 from West Fulton High School and subsequent night school at what became Georgia State University. She was a member of West Fulton Owl Club until dementia took away her ability to write. As a teenager, she worked for Campbell Coal Company until the early 1950's leaving the company for marriage and family. Homemaker was her vocation until the mid 1970s, when she returned to work in a financial planning firm in Pennsylvania for four years. She then returned to homemaking for the rest of her life. She met her husband of 60 years at the church next door during WWII. Then her adventures began. Domestic travel, Cuba and relocation from Atlanta, Georgia to Dallas, Texas to Allentown, Pennsylvania back to Atlanta then to Orlando, Florida and finally splitting her time between Palm Coast, Florida and Saco, Maine.

Throughout her life she was known for three interests, her prayerful love of the Lord, correspondence and crafts/sewing. She actively participated in teaching and mentoring activities during each of her church memberships. She read the Bible daily along with daily devotional books. She was known for writing numerous cards and letters to family and friends which they came to rely on through the years for her support and counsel or just a good story. She joined various organizations that taught her different crafts and sewing skills.

Finally vascular dementia robbed her of skills to function on a daily basis. Despite this, her daughter would greet her every morning with "Good morning mother dear" to which she would respond "Good morning Susan dear" to which she would respond "It's a beautiful day the Lord hath made", regardless of the weather, to which she would respond "Let us rejoice and be glad in it". Amen

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Oscar Fulton Hindsman, her parents, John and Mary Roper and her sister, Betty Roper Sims.

She is survived by her loving daughter Susan Hindsman Heard (Charles) and grand dog Zoey of Palm Coast, Florida and Camp Ellis, Saco, Maine. She is also survived by her niece Mary Sims Smith of Bluffton, South Carolina, her great nephew Casey Tyler Smith (Angela) of Marietta, Georgia, great niece Jenny Smith Nelson (Jay) of Callawassee Island, South Carolina and seven great great nieces and nephews.

Her family wishes to acknowledge the loving, extraordinary care in Camp Ellis provided by Taylor Simmons for the last four years, Stacey Nicholas Hittle for the last three years and Hospice of Southern Maine this summer until her death. Her family wishes to acknowledge the loving, extraordinary care in Palm Coast provided by Effie Allen, April Hagan and Marcia Stamboulian with support from VITAS Healthcare. This was a challenging four year journey with vascular dementia. Margaret thrived in a home environment with her family. Her family could not sustain this environment for her without this village of caregivers.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Internment for both Margaret and Fulton will be in the family's plot in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia.
