Mary Karvonides Shaw

Mary Karvonides Shaw, 91, of Saco and formerly of Biddeford, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford.

She was born in Biddeford on March 5, 1933, a daughter of Nicholas Karvonides and Chresoula Gregoriades Karvonides. Mary attended Biddeford High School for two years and graduated from Thornton Academy, class of 1951.

Mary's first job was at Woolworth's Department Store. In 1952, she gained employment as a teller at Pepperell Trust Company. Mary was with Pepperell for over 40 years, retiring in 1993 as President and CEO. After leaving the bank, she subsequently worked as a tax preparer at HR Block for 16 years, retiring at age 83 in 2016.

On November 13, 1965, she married the love of her life David C. Shaw. They had two children.

Mary cherished her family and the time they spent together. Holidays, family celebrations and especially Sundays were important times to gather and eat Mary's cooking that she lovingly prepared for everyone. Despite her long life, her departure has left family and close friends heartbroken.

She was predeceased by her husband David C. Shaw on April 28, 1981. Her dear cousins Bette and Electra Zazopoulos and her brother Constantine Karvonides also passed prior to Mary.

She is survived by two children Christina Shaw Jacobsen and husband Shawn Jacobsen, Jere Shaw and his son Severin David Shaw and his son's mother Irena Zaburanna. She is also survived by her sister Joanna Karvonides Nkosi and husband Morley, their children Mandla and wife Camila, and Thenjiwe and husband Daniel and their daughter Lumuka. She also had two nieces and two nephews: Chrisi, Nicholas, Mia and Homer and their families.

Mary chose to be cremated. A Memorial Celebration of Mary's life is planned for December when family can gather from abroad and other parts of the country.

A Graveside Memorial Service will take place at 11:30am on Friday, April 11, 2025 at Greenwood Cemetery in Biddeford.
