Valerie L. Kinney
Scarborough
Dr. Valerie L. Kinney, 71, of Scarborough, Maine, passed away on July 27, 2026, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Known to those who loved her as Val, she faced her final challenge with the same tenacity and grace that defined every chapter of her remarkable life.
Val was born on February 6, 1955, in Elgin, Illinois, where her curiosity, compassion, and determination took root early. She dedicated her entire life to helping others, first as a registered nurse for many years, caring for patients with warmth and skill. Never one to stop reaching, Val went on to earn her Doctorate in Psychology in 2006, a tremendous achievement that reflected her belief that it was never too late to grow, learn, and do more for the people around her. She overcame incredible obstacles to achieve her goals, and she inspired everyone who knew her along the way.
Val married Tom Kinney, and together they built a beautiful life spanning 45 years of love and partnership. She was a devoted mother to Jeff, Nicole, Brad, Carlyn, and Charlie Kinney, and a proud grandmother to twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immeasurable joy.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Val had a gift for making life more beautiful. She cared for stunning flower gardens with patience and artistry, filled her home with music, and showered her beloved pets with affection. She was also known for her award-winning chili, a source of great pride and friendly competition. Beautiful, intelligent, wise, and deeply compassionate, Val had a way of making people feel seen and cared for. Her sharp humor was always present and her laugh could fill any room.
She loved her family and friends so very deeply, and that love was returned many times over.
Val was predeceased by her parents; Francis and Marilyn (Nieland) Gilmore, and her sister Roxanne Newman.
Val is survived by her husband, Tom Kinney; her sons, Jeff, Brad, and Charlie Kinney; her daughters, Nicole Kinney and Carly Kinney; her brother, Doug Gilmore; her twelve grandchildren; and her three great-grandchildren.
In keeping with Val's wishes, there will be no formal service. A celebration tribute will be created soon. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Valerie's name to William James College: https://www.williamjames.edu/give/donation-form.html
The family asks that those who loved her remember her by extending kindness to others, just as she always did. May she rest peacefully in the arms of the Lord she faithfully served, her work on this earth complete and her legacy of love enduring.
